I had been having a stressful week and was not much in the mood for being social. That all changed in an instant when I saw Chizz Bah featuring Lainey Pablo and James Junes in the second “Get N’ Chizzy With It” Comedy Night at Dino's Hideaway and Lounge (405 Cr 390 Farmington) on Friday June 30th, 2023.
Lainey Pablo took the stage first with absolutely hilarious and relatable content about working on the reservation and dealing with demanding coworkers. She had the crowd in stitches with a bit about her husband and cracked jokes about hickeys that almost had me spitting my drink out from laughing so hard! This was my first experience seeing live comedy and I'm absolutely hooked now already! You could tell instantly how much her comedy means to her fans by how eagerly they approach her. One fan even came up to her after the show to tell her they clean the house while singing a song she posted on her social media about food stamps set to the tune of Folsom Prison Blues by Johnny Cash. I went back later and watched it and laughed even harder! When I asked her how addictive it is making people laugh she said It's a passion and judging by the reaction of her fans in the crowd they're addicted to the way she makes them laugh too!
James Junes was hysterically funny. He told a hilarious story about running a marathon in Shiprock and being passed by a young guy he suddenly felt he needed to catch up to. He told the crowd to follow along physically, using their thumbs and rubbing them together to make an illustration that turned out to be what the runner’s butt cheeks looked like when he passed him. The roar of laughter from the crowd was instantaneous and deafening!
Chizz Bah had her suitcase with her when she took to the stage and told some uproarious jokes about being stranded at an airport in Houston and ‘becoming an airline employee’. It was relatable to any person who has ever spent any length of time waiting around an airport. She ended her set with a joke in the beautiful Navajo language that she said was a public service announcement about pinion nuts. It ended with a hysterical quip: “Don't forget to wash your nuts.” and the crowd went wild, everyone howled with laughter!
I sat down with Lainey Pablo after the show and asked her what's next. She says they will absolutely be coming back to Dino's Hideaway and Lounge (405 Cr 390 Farmington) and that they are also working on organizing a show possibly at the Civic Center too. Overall this event made my night better and in fact made my entire difficult week better too!! They say laughter is the best medicine and after seeing such an awesome show from some of the funniest people ever, I couldn't agree more because it sure cured my bad attitude! My face hurt from smiling so much and my stomach hurt from laughing and I left the show feeling like a brand new person.
